How to Make a Good Table Read?

Table read is a document containing the agenda and points of discussion during the meeting which will be read and commented on by all meeting participants. This document is flexible and can be tailored to suit your needs.

A good reading table has: Reading Table Structure At least contains information about:

  • Meeting agenda: What is the purpose of this document and meeting? How was the meeting process - for example, was it 15 minutes of silent reading and commenting, then 30 minutes of discussion?
  • Meeting background: What was discussed at the meeting? What problem is trying to root? What background needs to be known about the problem? Principle: What parameters to solve the problem? Are there any organizational, team, or program principles to keep in mind?
  • Troubleshooting options: What are the troubleshooting methods, and what are the pros and cons?
  • Recommendations: What are the team's recommendations for solving the problem? Why make these recommendations? What's the next step? - Discussion questions: Where do we want to focus the discussion? Are there clear decisions we want to make or areas we would like to specifically include? - Attachments: Put anything here that you want to monitor for later but don't really need to be read by the audience for the meeting. Some common examples include, research details, data tables, glossaries, etc.

Not in the form of points This means that the table read is not in the form of essence or points like a presentation document or PowerPoint. The contents of the read table must be elaborative and comprehensive text. It's also a collaborative document - we recommend that you use Google Docs.

It Doesn't Take Long to Read and Understand Table read should be readable in about one third to half of the specified meeting time. For example, suppose it takes you about 10 minutes to read the Reading Table in a 30-minute meeting. However, you can add more time if meeting participants need additional time to comment.

Maximum 6 Pages This amount is deemed sufficient to cover a complex and strategic topic (excluding attachments). The 6-page reading table is suitable for an hour-long meeting, consisting of: 15 minutes of reading, 10-15 minutes of commenting, and 30 minutes of discussion.

Enter Relevant and Required Information Avoid providing links to other documents, so that participants stay focused on the document. You can still include links to external sources, but be aware that not all meeting participants have time to open these links. Use footnotes. State acronyms and briefly describe foreign terms.
